SWARTLAND AREA

DARLING

Still early in the season for the Darling wildflowers. Good rains recently show promise of a good season to come.

Darling flora group headed by Helene Preston (082 222 8135) will explore the reserves around Darling and Yzerfontein as follows:

Weds 01 August - Meeting at 10h00 am at the gate to the Bokbaai Vygie trail, Yzerfontein

Weds 08 August – Meeting at 9h30 am at the Herbarium in Darling

Weather permitting of course – See you there!

LOCATION OF FLOWERS:        Darling Renosterveld Reserve (Access at top of village                                                   behind the Darling Primary School or lower down gate in                                                      Langfontein street);

                                                Darling Groenekloof Reserve (R315 alongside the SPCA                                                           premises) Park at the SPCA and enter through the small gate                                               on the road;

                                                Tienie Versfeld Reserve (R315 Darling – Yzerfontein);

                                                Visitors should walk to the left of the reserve following the old                                             boardwalk and stay on the paths as it is rather wet in places                                                          otherwise.

TYPE OF FLOWERS:                     Darling Renosterveld Reserve: Fragrant blou pypie (gladiolus                                                gracilis) also some  pink; hesperantha (bontrok aandblom) –                                                 opens in afternoons;blue Suteria uncinata (bos opslag),                                                        Harmannias (poproos); oxalis (suring); the odd arum;                                                           lachenalia (viooltjie); abundant kapokbossie – Eriocephalus.

                                                Darling Groenekloof Reserve:

                                                Tiny lantern-like heads of the orange and yellow poproos                                                     (Hermannia); Trachyandra (kool); salmon Oxalis purpurea                                                     (Suring); white pelargonium; bright red climber Microloma                                                   (bokmaellie); yellow senecio pubigerus (skraalbossie)the pink                                                 (endangered) Lampranthus ficaulis (vygie);cotula – from the                                        all-yellow to the white ray floretted one;Tetragonia; magenta                                          Muraltia. Due to the burn in this area a couple of seasons                                                      ago, one can easily view the shiny green thorny leaves of the                                         arctopus plus Haemanthus leaves and others which live on                                                          the floor and are not always visible in denser vegetation. In                                                         another week or so this reserve will be well worth a visit as                                                       more flora show their faces.

                                                Tienie Versfeld

                                                Orange arctotis (gousblom) coming along nicely; gazania; Dimorphotheca (rain daisies); a few arum lilies; early blue flax (heliophila) is starting. Babiana will start flowering within the next week.

NAMAKWA NATIONAL PARK

Hi all

I will start sending out weekly updates for the flowers for Namaqua National Park from today. Please let me know if I should remove your name, or if I should add someone else.

Rainfall, Skilpad section, Namaqua National Park:

April 2012: 13.71mm

May 2012: 14.74mm

June 2012: 86.62mm

July 2012: 35.30mm (to date)

The rain is later than the previous year, but fell with good intervals.

The orange daisies are now starting to make a good showing, with nice carpets already visible at the Skilpad section of the park. Surings (Oxalis sp) are also visible in big patches. Some species like the Varkiesknol (Conicosia elongata) and Pietsnot are all making buds and will soon come out en masse. The Skilpad section is already well worth a visit.

The Caracal Ecotrail from Skilpad to Kookfontein is unbelievable, the best the past 5 years. Numerous species are flowering in big patches all along this route. Please note that you will need a 4x4 for this specific track.

The coastal areas have had reasonable rains and we are predicting a good showing here as well.

I will start including some photos from next week onwards.

Kind regards
