NAMAQUA NATIONAL PARK

Hi all

I will be sending out weekly updates for the flowers for Namaqua National Park, and if I have information on the region adjacent to the park I will include that as well. I will start including some photos from next week.

Rainfall, Skilpad section, Namaqua National Park:

March 2013: 38.09mm (most of it on 29-31 March)

April 2013: 46.74mm

May 2013: 12.69mm

June 2013: 76.71mm

We had very early, good rains in March and April, and then a hot dry spell in May. It is uncertain how this will affect the flowers, but it do seem as if the flowers are earlier than normal, for the Skilpad section at least. There are already a surprising number of flowers in Skilpad. In this area Orange daisies (Ursinia sp.); Sporries (Heliophila sp.); Surings (Oxalis sp) and Pietsnot (Grielum humifusum) are already starting to make a good showing. If you have a 4x4 vehicle the coastal section from the Spoeg river to the Groen river is, as usual, already good for a variety of species and colors.

The road from Garies to Groen river, as well as the road from Garies to Hondeklip bay, seem to have a lot more Beetle Daisies (Gorteria diffusa).

The road to Skilpad from Kamieskroon is drivable but has had some rain damage and we are awaiting the roads department to grade it for us.

Kind regards
