PORTERVILLE


140km North of Cape Town on the R44, lies the picturesque town of Porterville, at the foot of the majestic Olifantsriver Mountains. Now famous for being a "Paragliders' Paradise", Porterville was established in 1863 after Frederick John Owen, (one of the original 1820 Settlers), subdivided his farm Pomona into plots, naming the town after the popular Attorney General of the Cape, William Porter. The Groot Winterhoek Nature Reserve & Wilderness Area (via the Dasklip Pass) just outside Porterville, features one of the largest natural rock pools in South Africa and offers several hiking trails, an abundance of fauna and flora and dramatic rock formations. In addition the Waterfall Trail with 22 constant waterfalls, its Blue Crane Routes, the blooming of the rare Disa Uniflora (mid Jan - mid Feb) and Porterville Wine Cellar with its unique wines, make Porterville a definite stopover for a taste of true country hospitality, diversity and authenticity.
