The Cederberg Wilderness Area lies east and south of Clanwilliam. This isolated, undeveloped area and the breathtaking natural beauty, with a variety of fynbos species and unique rock formations, ensures a true Wilderness Experience: exposure to natural elements, a degree of freedom and isolation. Mainly hiking is permitted in the area. For the less fit tourist, the more accessible Stadsaal Caves with its famous Elephant drawings, are available. Algeria and Kliphuis offer camping facilities in ideal proximity to the Wilderness Area. Several accommodation and recreation possibilities are also available in the Cederberg Conservation Area.
Cape Nature Conservation attempts to protect the biodiversity of the total Cederberg Range, within the Wilderness Area, with Special Management Programmes for the Cedar Tree, eight endemic fish species and the Cape Mountain Leopard.
