BITTERFONTEIN, RIETPOORT,
NUWERUS & KLIPRAND

Bitterfontein

In the heart of the Hardeveld lies Bitterfontein. The surrounding area is one of the best spots for flower viewing during the spring. The town took its name after the very saline fountain, the "Bitterfontein" which still exists. Bitterfontein is well-known for its delicious mutton and sheep farming is the main agriculture activity of the area. Also mined here is the rare "Bitterfontein Green", a green granite found nowhere else in the world. Visit the "Boerewinkel" General Dealer for assorted sweets in a papercone or for fresh butter. You can also ask the locals to tell you the story about why Bitterfontein got the hotel and Nuwerus the church….

Rietpoort

The small missionary village of Rietpoort is a mere 28km drive away from Bitterfontein, off the N7. Tucked away between impressive granite formations that changes colour with the passing of the sun overhead, Rietpoort's friendly inhabitants will welcome you to their part of Namaqualand. In Rietpoort you can experience an adventurous donkey cart ride as well as traditional cuisine presented as a picnic, or the local choir will entertain you with traditional songs. Beautiful wild flowers colour the area during springtime, so for a Namaqualand experience with a difference, do include Rietpoort in your tour plans.
